Reiki is a form of energy healing in which the practitioner directs energy to flow to the receiver. It brings the body's natural state of equilibrium into balance, promoting deep levels of relaxation along with incredible releases of tension in the body. When tension is released, the body can better relax, leading to a calmer nervous system response and reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
There are a lot of ways to stimulate the nervous system in today's world. A culture that often promotes working long hours, over indulging in things like caffeine, alcohol and endless amounts of screen time are making more and more people feel disconnected from their own bodies. Taking time to specifically ground and breath into one's own spirit with the help of the healing energy of Reiki is a beautiful way to maintain balance and fill your own energetic cup back up.
During a Reiki session, gentle touch or hovering hands can stimulate the PNS(Parasympatheic Nervous System), lowering heart rate, reducing blood pressure, and encouraging the body to shift into a deeply relaxed state. The PNS is responsible for the "rest and digest" state, which counters the "fight or flight" response associated with stress.
When I'm working with clients, one element I focus on balancing are body’s energy centers, or chakras. Each are believed to influence mental, emotional, and physical well-being in their own way. For example, if there's a block in the heart chakra, I have cleansed and released it using Reiki and had clients immediately burst into tears of joy because they felt a heavy emotion leave their body. Releasing these emotions allows the body and mind to process them healthily, reducing triggers that would otherwise activate the nervous system. When the chakras are balanced, the flow of energy throughout the body is optimized, supporting the nervous system’s function and promoting a sense of inner peace.
